Like many, we were deeply affected by the wave of anti-AAPI violence last year. AAPI-led, AAPI-serving organizations across the country were forced to fight back against hateful rhetoric. In an effort to arm leaders with tools and expertise, we’ve partnered with the Asian American Federation and the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans. Together, we are hosting a six-week bootcamp focused on key topics ranging from interacting with and leveraging media, to creating digital campaigns, to use storytelling to advance advocacy.
The AAPI Advocacy Bootcamp is intended to support nonprofit organizations in building advocacy skills to navigate an ongoing pandemic, systemic racism, and a dynamic political landscape while creating an atmosphere of mutual support and development among Asian and Pacific Islander nonprofits. The program is structured as a six-week bootcamp consisting of six webinars and corresponding office hours for additional support.
Launched on January 18, we are now on our third week of the bootcamp. We’ve already covered how to effectively elevate organizational leaders with Senior Vice President of Communications & Public Affairs Jade Floyd and trained our attendees for any kind of media opportunity with Director of Communications & Public Affairs Janet Allon and Vice President of Communications & Public Affairs Marneé Banks.
This week, we are building off last week’s media training with a session on how to prepare messaging and leverage opportunities during times when the media turns their attention to AAPI-related issues, led by Vice Presidents of Communications & Public Affairs Jason Green and May Malik. The last three sessions will delve into political advocacy with Partner Justin Lapatine, digital campaigns with Manager of Communications & Public Affairs PJ Amartey, and the art of storytelling with Senior Vice President of Creative Strategy Robert Lee.
