A’Lelia Bundles’ story embodies generational legacy – the great-granddaughter of Madam CJ Walker, a pioneering entrepreneur and philanthropist recognized as the first self-made female millionaire in America. A’Lelia herself is a renowned journalist and author dedicated to preserving her family’s renowned legacy.

Madam CJ Walker was a visionary, a business mogul who created economic opportunities and invested in philanthropic efforts despite facing racial discrimination and societal obstacles. You can learn more about her impact in the Netflix series “Self Made,” inspired by A’Lelia’s biography of Madam CJ Walker. This June, A’Lelia will release her newest book “Joy Goddess,” focusing on Ella Walker, Madam CJ Walker’s daughter, and her significant influence during the Harlem Renaissance.

Remembering women’s contributions across generations is a powerful tool to ensure that their impact continues to shape a more equitable world – and A’Lelia is doing just that.

We are gifting one copy of A’Lelia’s new book to a lucky reader. Email us with the subject line “Joy Goddess” for a chance to win.

Daniela Fernandez founded the Sustainable Ocean Alliance from her dorm room in 2014 after attending a United Nations meeting on climate change and realizing she was the youngest person in the room. Even then, Daniela knew that political and business leaders were not moving fast enough to prevent disaster. Over the next decade, Daniela propelled SOA into the global spotlight by establishing a presence in 165 countries and accelerating over 266 solutions to heal, protect, and restore our oceans.

Today, Daniela works on global stages alongside leaders investing in ocean technology solutions, advocating for moratoriums for deep seabed mining, and ensuring access to clean waterways. She is driving the conversation and the solutions while lifting up the next generation of leaders.

This past month, Daniela announced that she will step down from her role of CEO after ten impactful years. Under her leadership tenure, SOA has grown into a global force for ocean health, funding and supporting hundreds of ocean solutions, empowering thousands of young leaders worldwide, and securing critical partnerships to scale impact-driven solutions.

In 2020, Aurora James founded the Fifteen Percent Pledge in response to ongoing racial injustices in the United States. Recognizing that Black people in the U.S. make up nearly 15% of the population, the Fifteen Percent Pledge calls on major retailers and corporations to commit a minimum of 15% of their annual purchasing power to Black-owned businesses.

Five years later, the non-profit has partnered with more than 30 major retailers and connected them with over 800 Black businesses. Despite ongoing attacks and pushbacks on DEI, Aurora and her team remain committed to fighting for a more diverse and inclusive future for all.

At GSG, our formidable group of women leaders have worked for mission driven organizations, policy leaders, corporations and advocacy groups. Before you go, hear from some of our leaders about what Women’s History Month and celebrating women in leadership means to us.
