The Melting Pot, November 2025: African American Voter Opinion

This latest installment of GSG’s ongoing series, The Melting Pot, takes an in-depth look at how Black voters are experiencing Trump 2.0. While Black voters continue to be a strong and reliable Democratic bloc, Democrats have an important opportunity to further strengthen support and engagement, particularly among younger Black men.

Key insights include:

  • Negative perceptions of Trump’s presidency: Black voters continue to have highly negative attitudes toward the second Trump Administration. Among Black voters, Trump’s job approval has plummeted by double digits during his first nine months in office while his economic job approval—down from historically high levels with Black voters when he began his second term—has steadily declined back to where it was during his first term.
  • Emerging swing segment: 17% of the Black electorate qualify as swing voters — disproportionately younger (55% under 45), male (55%), and moderate (65%) — with mixed views of both parties.
  • Economic anxiety dominates: Across demographics, the cost of living, jobs, and housing affordability rank as top priorities.

These results paint a vivid picture of Black voters’ deep economic strain and declining satisfaction with Trump’s second term. This environment presents clear challenges for both parties—Democrats must find a way to demonstrate they are fighting for Black voters and not taking them for granted, and Republicans are going to have to defend a policy agenda that to many Black voters appears hostile. Once again, Black voters are poised to be a decisive voting bloc ripe for persuasion in the upcoming midterm elections.
