GSG hosted its last Inside Scoop of the year featuring Karen Persichilli Keogh, Secretary to Governor Kathy Hochul. As the highest-ranking appointed position in state government, Persichilli Keogh rarely makes public appearances herself. However, she joined a full room of New York’s leading changemakers to delve into the pressing issues that impact the state today. Attendees ranged from two former Governor Secretaries, Rich Baum and Bill Mulrow, to MTA Chairman and CEO – and previous Inside Scoop speaker – Janno Lieber.
As we approach the end of another year and prepare for a new administration, the landscape of governance in New York is marked by both challenges and opportunities. With that in mind, Persichilli Keogh spent time shedding light on how New York State will adapt to an uncertain political landscape in Washington, D.C. The Governor’s team is doing a full audit of its funds to understand what resources are available – and what state programs and assets may require protection. While reflecting on the great challenges ahead, Persichilli Keogh also pointed to Democrats’ success defending five out of seven battleground house seats through a coordinated, statewide campaign, highlighting the strength of our message and ability to mobilize support.
At the heart of the Hochul administration’s agenda are key issues that resonate deeply with New Yorkers: affordability and quality of life. Persichilli Keogh also touched on balancing ambitious goals for carbon reduction, protecting women’s health, and ensuring immigrants’ safety in the state. Specifically, the prospect of mass deportations and other anti-immigrant programs weigh heavily on the administration.
Finally, the Governor’s commitment to transit cannot be overlooked. By reintroducing congestion pricing and implementing innovative policies, the administration has shown its dedication to fully funding our public transportation system for future generations of New Yorkers.
As we look ahead, it is clear that Persichilli Keogh and Governor Hochul’s team are dedicated to navigating the unique complexities of governance with a focus on collaboration, innovation, and responsiveness to the needs of New Yorkers.
